Course Overview
In this half-day course, participants will learn techniques for assigning Control Bands to hazardous chemicals for the purpose of protecting workers through engineering controls. The course will focus on the two major systems publicly available: the UK Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) Chemical Control Toolkit. Beginning with the hazard classification of the chemical, the participants will step through a series of questions to assign the Hazard Group of the chemical, including using GHS classifications and EU R phrases, if available. The participants will use the hazard groups, along with the type of task, the amount used and the physical state to assign control bands. Recent developments from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) will be presented. Course format is online with participant exercises.
